Some of the most outstanding examples of domestic architecture in Australia have been showcased, with the shortlist for the 2021 Houses Awards announced.

More than 70 projects across the state have been shortlisted for the 2021 Houses Awards, with the winners to be announced on July 30.

This year’s project has highlighted the diversity of design, function, sustainability and innovation from some of the country’s leading architects.

Chair of the 2021 Houses Awards Katelin Butler said the extraordinary breadth of talent in the Australian architectural landscape was world-class.

“This year, the jury was impressed by the many ways that extraordinary and clever architectural outcomes were created from ordinary materials or existing conditions,” she said.

“Context and neighbourhood were pleasantly seen to be strong drivers of design, stitching the homes into heir surroundings and giving something back to the public realm.

“There was also a strong emphasis on easy access to private outdoor space and how the home connects to these landscaped living spaces, determining how often these areas are used.”

The awards will be handed out across nine categories, with one home to be awarded “Australian House of the Year” –  each category offers a cash prize of $1,000, with the winner of the major prize to receive $5,000.

It’s easy to see how Y-House got its name.

At its core, Harley House is a series of rooms and courtyards united under one roof.

Milkbar House

This project consists of work to a much-loved building typology seldom seen these days – a corner milk bar with residence attached. We were very keen to capture the exciting experience of threshold that walled cities provide – a street door in a blank wall into an ‘oasis’.
