An extended family with 16 children will join the likes of Ray Hadley and Harvey Norman in Dural after purchasing a Sydney house for $1 million above the reserve.

Known as La Casona – Spanish for “big house” – the 13-bedroom home was sold $5.05 million after a heated bidding war between two interested parties.

Selling agent Will Hampson of Lumby Hampson said the price of 1233 Old Northern Rd in Middle Dural exceeded his expectations.

“We had multiple offers around the $3.8m to $4m mark. Two standout parties made pre-action offers of $4.2m and $4.3m, respectively,” he told ANZPJ.

“A bidding war erupted between the two parties, with the winning $5.05m offer made late Monday evening.

“The extended family who purchased the land includes four brothers, their four wives and sixteen children.”

Mr Hampson said the market in the area was strong, with people seeking acreage and a lifestyle change now overseas travel is limited due to coronavirus.

“The area gives buyers a property with space, a swimming pool and tennis court. There’s also room for horse riding and motorbikes,” he said.

“We have had a lot of interest from people across Sydney who are looking for a lifestyle change now they no longer need to commute to work every day.”

“There is a very strong demand for prestige property like the one sold.”

Mr Hampson believes the family were likely drawn to the Sydney house because of its multiple living zones, which divided the home into numerous self-contained areas.

The house is one of the largest in the area, with the property including parking for 10 cars, a spa, pool, bar, study, cellar, billiards room, five living rooms and 12 bathrooms.
